About The Songmen
With an enviable reputation as one of the UK's finest and most versatile a cappella groups, The Songmen possess a wealth of experience from the worlds of classical, sacred, and popular music, balancing their love for the old Renaissance masters with a passion for exciting contemporary composers through commissioning and performing their own original material. Regardless of what they sing, the universal principles of perfect tonal blend, colour, and precise intonation are fiercely strived for and shine through every performance. Recent highlights for the group have included their debut at the London A Cappella Festival at The King’s Place in London and tours of Germany where they headlined the Neustadter Musik Sommer Festival and northern Spain, and also being featured on Aled Jones’s The Choir programme on BBC Radio 3. 2012 also saw the exciting development of the group signing a worldwide Management and Agency contract with the celebrated UK classical Music Agency Ikon Arts Management. This Season The Songmen are preparing for a remarkable year ahead. Highlights will include them singing across the UK and in Europe in Perugia in Italy, Provence in France, the north of Germany, Ireland and London. The group will also continue to develop their Education Outreach Programme which has recently taken them to Oundle School, Bedford Modern School, Dean Close School and Tewkesbury School where they delivered a series of masterclasses to the very talented a cappella groups. Recordings 2012 sees the release of two exciting discs. A sacred classical disc entitled A Sacred Place containing some of the most loved sacred pieces in the canon, and a studio album of jazz and pop classics called Midnight featuring original arrangements, entirely conceived by members of the group. Education Working with other singers is one of the group's favourite activities and educational work is seen as a very important part of the Songmen's vocation, whether that's leading masterclasses at a school, running workshops for a choral society, or judging competitions. Building on last season's work with the a cappella groups at Oundle School and the Junior choirs at Bedford Modern Junior School, this year the group will be leading masterclasses and workshops at Tewkesbury School and Dean Close School in Gloucestershire.
