About Sunshine Kings

Sunshine Kings's profile picture
New Orleans / dixieland band
Hot New Orleans traditional and swing jazz, acoustic strolling band or for dancing

Having toured the UK and abroad playing at clubs and festivals with many great bands, Graham Hughes decided to use his experience to put together the Sunshine Kings. From the outset the philosophy was that good music should be combined with good entertainment: the musicians in the band should enjoy working together to make the many old tunes we play sound fresh and new. The band’s repertoire is drawn largely from the small group jazz of the 20’s and 30’s with a few other interesting numbers from other eras thrown in to spice things up. The Sunshine Kings have been building a reputation as a band that is not only a lot of fun to listen to but also great to dance to, bringing joy to clubs and festivals as far afield as Cornwall and Cumbria although most often seen in and around London. “ The Sunshine Kings where SO SO fantastic the other night – what stars and true professionals” “I could not have done it without their fantastic enthusiasm and calm performance – what an amazing and lovely group of performers” “I wanted to say a big thank you for connecting me to Graham and the Sunshine Kings. They did such a great job playing at our wedding on the 20th June. Truly OUTSTANDING. They were so upbeat, everyone loved the music and Graham and the band bent over backwards to make it a special night for us all. They really could not have been better. I would recommend them to anyone and give them a 5* Plus.”

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

We can do strolling trio / quartet / larger bands, with sousaphone , banjo, and either or all of clarinet, trumpet, trombone. We can also do a static band for dancing with double bass instead of sousaphone. We can include piano, and we also sing vocals if desired. All open to discussion.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We try to be flexible where possible, but you should note that at busy times of the year we may well be coming from another gig or going on to another gig.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, if we are providing a pa.

How much time do you need to set up?

We only need five or ten minutes to set up, but we aim to arrive at least 45 minutes before a booking to allow for potential hold-ups on the way.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Yes, if you book us as a roaming band.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes, and we can often do other songs. Just ask.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

We can provide PA as part of the fee

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If it's within the standard jazz repertoire then almost certainly. If it's something else then put it to us and we'll have a listen and let you know.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

We are all professional musicians who appear on stages up and down the UK and abroad with the Sunshine Kings as well as other bands. We turn up looking smart and take whatever occasion we are performing at seriously. We like to entertain all ages of people. With the Sunshine Kings you will get a class act.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

The musicians that make up the Sunshine Kings have performed all over the world on stages large and small, and at festivals: Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace, Chelsea Flower Show, Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Keswick Jazz Festival, Wilderness Festival, Upton Jazz Festival, Birmingham Jazz Festival, Upton Jazz Festival, The Savoy Hotel....

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Jack Teagarden, Nat King Cole, Jelly Roll Morton, Eddie Condon...

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

We take small private functions as seriously as "high profile" events. The musicians I call on for the Sunshine Kings are some of the best in the UK at playing vintage / New Orleans style jazz. So no one gig would be classed as the most high profile.

Hi Graham, So sorry I forgot to email you on Friday after speaking with Sally, she asked me to pass on her thanks to you and the band, she said everyone absolutely loved them and they were really fantastic. We'll definitely have to stay in touch for any future parties / events! Kind regards, Anna

Tea D, 1 year ago

We got some lovely feedback about the event from many of those who attended too – the music was great! (It took me back to New Orleans – could have been straight out of Preservation Hall!) Best Karen
