About Still Reeling

Ceilidh band
Darwen
Public liability insurance of £5 million
Ceilidh and Barn Dance Band based in the North West of England

Still Reeling was formed 9 years ago for a nieces 21st, that one off event snowballed and now we perform at Weddings; Parties; Charity Events and Festivals. Mary the Band Leader had played in several other Barn Dance and Ceilidh Bands historically, as had Paul the bands caller. Several of the band have been part of the English Traditional (or Morris) scene and have danced and played (also role of MD) for numerous sides, All our musicians are trained on their instruments, some at degree level. Our musicians are not all from the usual Folk background, we have classically trained musicians and experience from diverse styles eg Brass Band and Jazz adding their style to Ceilidh.

Customer questions

Can you perform covers?

As a ceilidh band we do not perform covers, however we are willing to discuss if you have a favourite dance; particular tune or a theme for your event eg Scottish or Hoe Down.

Do you have different line-up options?

Our Line up is Piano Accordion, Bass Guitar and either Violin or Flute. We also have a Rhythm Guitarist, plus our flute player and one of our violinists play Saxophone and our caller plays Banjo and Rhythm Guitar.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible, especially for weddings, just get in touch with us and let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We provide recorded music played through our PA kit during any breaks taken by the band, this service is also provided whilst guests arrive to help set the ambiance for the event. Following your Ceilidh we are happy to have your iPod (or similar device) played through our PA, with your own playlist, we do charge an additional fee for this.

How much time do you need to set up?

We require at least I hour to set up prior to performance, and recommend that this is before your guests start to arrive.

Do you provide a caller?

Yes we have a caller as part of our regular line up. However we have worked with other callers, already booked by an events organiser. If your event requires us only to play traditional music our caller is also a musician.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Our set lists are chosen to give you and your guests a variety of speeds and styles. However we are always willing to discuss your requests for particular dances and themes for your event.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

All equipment is included in our quote, including light effects if you choose to have your own playlist following the ceilidh played via our PA equipment.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

As our main style is music only we don not usually perform songs, however we have had requests for particular tunes (especially for the first dance at a wedding), we will always consider learning a new tune.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients love our flexibility, our caller is experienced at judging attendees needs and will adjust our programme at an event is necessary. Our performance is for all ages, and fully inclusive.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We have performed at numerous venues from School and Church Halls to venues like Chester Town Hall and Victoria Baths Manchester

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

As traditional musicians, this is difficult to answer, as so many people have added to what I consider our unique style. Playing in traditional musicians sessions, many unknown musicians have influenced us too. With some of our musicians we also have influences from Brass Band, Classical and Jazz.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Maybe a cliché but everyone's gig is special to us and no two gigs are the same. Still Reeling have performed at Folk Festivals in the North West. Aside from Ceilidhs we were delighted to arrange and perform the score for a Scottish Themed play at a local theatre.

Just wanted to again thank you for Friday night ceilidh at our wedding, everyone thoroughly enjoyed both the music and dancing, even though we had to “cajole” guests to join in at times! It was a super atmosphere- everything Dave and I wished for. I will leave a review on your website and would recommend you unreservedly

Thank you for playing for the Family Ceilidh in Kirkland Memorial Hall, Churchtown, by Garstang. You were able to create the music to fit the speed and varied timing of the youngest dancers - so skilled!! and they all danced their socks off. We made about £200 donation to the Churchtown Festival Garstang Childrens Festival. Thank you again.
