Sophia Alexandra Hall is a Swedish born Jazz/Funk/Classical Saxophonist based in London. She is also a radio presenter with the Jazz London Radio, and her show, 'Sophia's Big Band Corner' airs weekly on Sundays 6-8pm. She plays solo saxophone with the band, Funktion!, lead saxophone for Imperial College Big Band, and works with singer/songwriter, Jess Bollands. Having recently graduated with honours in Music from the University of Oxford, she is currently studying MSc Management at Imperial College London Business School. Originally starting as a classical saxophonist, Sophia has performed a number of solo recitals. Notable concerto performances include Alexander Glazunov’s 'Concerto in Eb Major’, Eric Coates’s ‘Saxo-Rhapsody’, Claude Debussy's 'Rhapsodie' and most recently Jacques Ibert’s ‘Concertino da Camera’. Sophia has performed on local and national radio, including premiering a new composition by Anna Meredith in 2016, on BBC Radio 3, as part of International Women's Day celebrations. As a chamber musician, Sophia has worked with the Southbank Sinfonia, the Purcell Symphony Orchestra, the Orion Orchestra, the Cigar Cutters, and the Villa-Lobos Sextet. As a classical soloist and chamber musician, she has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Milton Court, the Barbican, St Martin in the Field, St James’s Piccadilly, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Buckingham Palace, Stockholms Konserthus (Sweden), Örebro Konserthus (Sweden), St Gatien Cathedrale (France) and Cattedrale di San Lorenzo (Italy). The beginning of Sophia's Jazz training began when she was awarded the baritone saxophone chair with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra 2 in 2010. Since then, she has performed at many notable venues including; PizzaExpress Jazz Club (London), Shapeshifter Lab (New York) and Brown Sugar Jazz Boutique (Bangkok). From 2015-2018 she held the baritone saxophone, and lead alto chair with the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra. Sophia also has a deeprooted love of Funk music and was one of the founding members of the Oxford-based band "Sisters of Funk". Sophia has performed in over 20 countries across five continents and most recently completed a tour of Thailand. She has studied saxophone since the age of 7 and trained at both the Purcell School of Music and the Royal College of Music (junior department) on a Government Music and Dance Scholarship. Sophia also plays the piano, clarinet and has worked extensively as a Musical Director within Jazz and Musical Theatre; in 2017, she was elected as the first female President of the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra. She is also a manager within the music industry and has had past careers at the Royal Opera House, the BBC, and Stephens Nicoloson Artists Management (NYC).
