About The Slappy Jessops Ceilidh Band

Ceilidh band
Newcastle upon Tyne
Public liability insurance of £10 million
A dynamic three-piece ceilidh band made up of fiddle, accordion and percussion. We aim to provide a fun ceilidh for beginners and experts!

Hailing from Newcastle University's prestigious music degree and equally vibrant folk scene, The Slappy Jessops Ceilidh Band look to get everyone dancing by mixing a range of different musical qualities that each member brings to the band. From foot-stomping fiddle lines and roaring accordion sweeps to daring dance rhythms, we intend to bring an excellent ceilidh experience with a taste for the unknown. Merle Harbron is a predominantly Scottish fiddle player who has recently graduated from Newcastle's prestigious folk music degree. As a Scottish player influenced by many genres and styles, her sound is unique and dynamic. Her love for ceilidh music stemmed from her participation in the Argyll Ceilidh Trail in which she gained experience in some 100 ceilidhs across Scotland and England. She enjoys the sound of rain. Michael McLernon grew up competing nationally with Piano Accordion and came through the St Rochs Irish Music organisation in Glasgow, in which he gained experience as a ceilidh accordionist and caller. He is now studying music at Newcastle University and enjoys playing traditional music from across the UK and abroad. He also enjoys long walks on the beach. Ben Fitzgerald is a Northumbrian musician and an accomplished percussionist. He is a multi-instrumentalist with experience drawn from eclectic world music, spanning from Latin America to West Africa. He is now looking to combine these different traditional dance rhythms and incorporate them into ceilidhs. He is currently studying music at Newcastle University and is an experienced folk player. Ben likes dogs. If you would like to engage with us on this polka through life, we'd love to hear from you! Happy Ceilidhing!
