Multi-instrumentalist, composer, tutor and musical director, Sam Johnson has been a working musician for the past 15 years and is currently based in York, UK.
Leading a number of interesting and exciting projects, Sam writes, performs and collaborates with some of the U.K’s best young musicians up and down the country. He has performed recurrently at Cheltenham Jazz Festival as part of the Donkey Zoo Collective, performing his own compositions as well as a number of collaborative works, whilst also being part of a number of other high profile events around the country.
He made his large scale ensemble composition debut with The Sam Johnson Big Band in 2012 and continues to write for the group on a regular basis. Other projects include hip-hop jazz collective Bröød, indie folk trio Ampersand & a number of releases under his own name.
Sam is also a qualified tutor and workshop leader, graduating from The University of York with a 1st Class Music B.A in 2014 and was awarded the Horatio Waywell Prize in 2012 for acheiving the highest Grade 8 woodwind result on the ABRSM board that year.
Sam is also known for his session work, recording and playing for Leo James Conroy, his trio work with Georgia Johnson & James Wood, and and his musical pit performing.
