Currently studying Traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Rory Matheson hails from Drumbeg, on the North West coast of Scotland. Having been brought up with the West-Coast ceilidh tradition, Rory has years of experience playing at ceilidhs all around Scotland, playing in many different ceilidh bands on both piano and accordion. However Rory is equally experienced in playing in more contemporary folk ensembles, including a large 20-piece regional band called ‘Snas that perform in Eden Court and Aviemore Concert Hall every year and were also part of the Fort George Military Tattoo in 2015. Most recently Rory has has joined a new, energetic band ‘TRIP’, influenced by the Irish, Scottish, Manx, and Northern English traditions. Having launched at Celtic Connections 2017, TRIP are going on to play some high profile gigs and festivals this year. Rory’s style is mainly influenced by the music of the West-Coast - pipe music, Gaelic song etc - however elements of Jazz and Blues have also influenced his approach to traditional music, especially on piano. He is currently being taught by James Ross and Mary McCarthy, two of the top pianists in the traditional music scene. Also, Rory has been involved with Feis Rois for many years, and has recently joined their touring band, which involves performing at prestigious events around the world, including Romania and tours of Australia. Currently studying Traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Rory Matheson hails from Sutherland, on the North West coast of Scotland. Growing up playing the accordion, he changed his hand to the piano during high-school and found a passion for accompanying. Rory’s style is heavily influenced by the music of the highlands and islands, however elements of jazz and blues have also influenced his approach to traditional music, creating a powerful and sympathetic rhythm player.
