Rafael Lopes is a UK based jazz saxophonist, having graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in jazz he has been an active member of both London and Birmingham’s music scene. Rafael Lopes has been working as a professional musician for about 15 years both in Portugal, UK and has performed alongside some of the most prestigious UK and Europe’s artists such as Jay Phelps (UK and worldwide best Jazz Trumpet Players), Victoria and The Vintage Youth, Sonia “Indigo” Clarke, Town Hall Gospel Choir, Wayne Mattews, Lady Sanity, AYKU, Mario Bakuna Trio, Issac & The Soulful Junkies, D’Alva, and Barbara Lagido Trio. Some of his most relevant performances as a jazz musician include being part of support bands for some of the world’s most accomplished artists such as 12 times Grammy-nominated artist and holder of one Grammy for “Best Gospel Song” in 2011 American saxophonist Kirk Whalum which became famous for his solo feature on Witney Houston’s track “I Will Always Love You” and 4 times Grammy Nominated MPB artist Ed Motta. As a session musician, Rafael Lopes has performed in a varied range of venues and festivals across the UK and Europe such as London´s Charlie Wright, Made in Brasil, Tia Maria, Barraco Bar, Floripa, Rjjz Jazz Café, Birmingham`s Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival 2015 to Portugal´s Hot Club, Alface Hall and playing at studio recordings, functions, events, theatre shows, weddings, tribute bands and most recently improvising alongside Dj’s. The vast range of experiences and unique playing style developed along the years make Rafael Lopes a musician with an immeasurable technique, versatility, talent, reputation and overall trust developed amongst those who have worked alongside him, which makes him a very strong candidate when considering a saxophonist.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Rafael Sax has acquired and developed an unique style, reputation and overall trust from his clients, which makes him a very reliable and strong candidate when considering a saxophonist to play with DJ’s improvising alongside all genres of music such as funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Latin, disco, house, 80’s and chillout music.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Birmingham’s Fumo, Nuvo Bar, Chameleon, Players, Dirty Martini, Sports & Music bar(Liverpool), The Warehouse(Leeds) and also overseas in the town of Amora (Portugal) where he was resident sax player for two consecutive summer seasons playing at Ibiza style parties alongside different Djs, electric violin, percussionists and vocals

Maceo Parker, Bill Evans(sax), David Sanborn, Eric Mariental and Kenny Garret.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I am always flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run-up to the event just let me know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. I can offer this service for an extra 150£. If you'd like a DJ service via our PA after the final set until the venue closes, we provide this for an additional £100.”

How much time do you need to set up?

I usually need about 30min before performance time.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

My setlists is crafted from countless performances and learning what works best to ensure client//guests have an amazing time. However, I am definitely happy to chat through and make sure we find what works for your event.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes I bring all my instruments, equipment and microphone

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If a song isn't included in our song list there may still be a chance we already know it. If there is a special song you'd like me to learn I am happy to do this for you.
