Vocal a cappella group. 5 female voices
United Kingdom
An a cappella group set up to explore the wealth of music from medieval times times to present day written specifically for female voices

“Papagena are a stunning addition to the vocal music scene: finely honed voices and stimulating concerts of music you have never heard of but want to hear again…think a young, female, Hilliard Ensemble” - The Prickle, Smart Arts Reviews 2015 Launched at London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2012, Papagena is an a cappella group set up to explore the wealth of music from medieval times to the present day written specifically for female voices. The group’s programming draws richly on traditional folk music and women’s working songs from around the world, juxtaposing these pieces with more classical repertoire from Hildegard of Bingen to Katy Perry and Birdy, as well as writing its own material and commissioning new arrangements and pieces from an eclectic range of composers. Errollyn Wallen is currently writing a collection of pieces called Rebuttal Blues for the group. The members of Papagena have all performed with some of the UK’s leading vocal groups including The Sixteen, Tenebrae, Ex Cathedra and Monteverdi Choir but share a passion for bringing a wider range of music from around the world to the public and juxtaposing pieces in intriguing new ways. The singers are Lizzie Drury, Steph Seeney, Abbi Temple, Sarah Tenant-Flowers* & Suzzie Vango* *directors
