Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

Our lineup is usually flute, oboe and clarinet, but we can also mix and match with bassoon and horn, depending on your needs and our individual availability.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

As we're a live acoustic ensemble, we don't use a PA, and therefore aren't able to offer and iPod service. The exception is if you've got a DJ setup separate from the music we will provide.

How much time do you need to set up?

We like to arrive at least an hour early, if not 90 minutes to acclimate to the space and do a sound check.

Can you roam around while you perform?

We don't normally do this, as we're usually bound to our chairs and stands. However, if you would like one or two songs with us roaming the area, this would be an additional £30 for us to memorise your chosen songs.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We are more than happy to create a bespoke set for your event. We have a few stand-bys, but after all, it's your day, so please let us know what will work and if you'd like any additional songs.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

All our equipment is ours, and is included in the quote. We often require chairs for the performance, but we bring our own stands and instruments.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If a song isn't included in our song list there may still be a chance we already know it. If there is a special song you'd like us to learn we are happy to do this for you. There is a fee of £30 for this service to take into account rehearsal times etc.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

We honestly love to make music, and it shows! We're passionate about creating the best atmosphere for each performance, and we are dedicated to communication with clients throughout the process.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We've performed at the Dora Stoutzker Hall at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, as well as graduations, recital halls, and more.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

We all came to the Royal Welsh to do our postgraduate degrees, so a lot of our heroes are professional classical musicians in the industry. As far as other ensembles, we especially appreciate the work of the Carion Quintet, London Winds, Cardiff Winds, Schubert Ensemble, Calefax Reed Quintet, the Gould Trio, and the Emerson Quartet.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

We had the honour of playing Welsh composer Peter Reynolds' "Silver Apples of the Moon" at his memorial service in March 2017.

Melys Winds were kind enough to perform at the funeral of a former staff member and donor. The ensemble chose fitting music, played with empathy and gave a particularly moving rendition of Elgar’s Chanson du Matin. We were grateful to the ensemble for their professionalism under emotional circumstances and their poignant performance.

The five young members of the Melys Wind Quintet responded well to the delicate poetry of Reynolds’ music, in an attractive and lucid performance of a piece whose seeming simplicity conceals much meticulous art.
