British oboist Melanie Rothman studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, with Nora Cismondi at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Regional de Paris, with David Walter at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where she was awarded her bachelor degree with highest honours in June 2015, and also with Stefan Schilli at the Universität Mozarteum, Salzburg where she graduated with a Master’s degree, also with high honours, in October 2018. At present she is continuing her studies in the performance of contemporary music at the Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie in Frankfurt. Melanie Rothman has been a recipient of a number of awards such as the Parepa Rosa Scholarship, the Leila Bull Oboe Prize and the Nicolas Blake Prize from the Royal Academy of Music, the Isle of Man Bank Prize from the Barbirolli International Oboe Competition in 2014 and was woodwind finalist of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition in 2008. In June 2019, she was semi-finalist in the woodwind category of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is invited as guest principal oboist with ensembles such as the Bamberger Symphoniker, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic, the Britten Sinfonia, the Tyrol Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of India. She has also performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, l'Orchestre d'Auvergne and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain under conductors such as Thomas Adès, Ivor Bolton, Jiří Bělohlávek, Robin Ticciati, Kent Nagano, Antonio Pappano and Semyon Bychkov. Besides having performed as soloist and chamber musician in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, St. John's Smith Square and the Tate Modern Gallery, Melanie Rothman is particularly interested in contemporary music; in the context of the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2017 she was invited to work together with Matthias Pintscher and Heinz Holliger, where she also performed alongside members of l'Ensemble Intercontemporain. She more recently took part in the 2019 Ensemble Modern Orchestra tour conducted by Sir George Benjamin which took her to stages such as the Cologne Philharmonie and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, In September 2019, she is due to perform the world premiere of Leonardo Marino's Oboe Concerto during the Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Utrecht, Holland.
