18 year old Jazz Drummer, based in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Music.

Kai Craig was born in Brighton in August, 2000. He and his family moved to Spain before he was two years old. Kai grew up with musical parents and grandparents and began playing his father’s drums at the age of two. He spent hours playing along to Foo Fighters and David Bowie records. At the age of five, the family moved to Devon and Kai started playing along to Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd and other great drummers in his father’s CD collection. This is where his love for jazz drumming was born. At the age of seven, he started formal tuition and had completed all Trinity College graded exams by the age of thirteen. Since starting formal tuition, Kai has practiced over 7500 hours and currently focuses on technical development, jazz playing and learns as many albums as he can get his hands on. Up until now, he has aimed to model aspects of his playing upon jazz legends such as Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and Max Roach. More recently, he has taken inspiration from modern jazz drummers such as Mark Guiliana and Antonio Sanchez. Through listening to groups such as the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet, Brian Blade Fellowship Band and the Dave Holland Quintet, Kai has gained the aspiration to start his own quintet. In the future, the quintet hopes to record albums and take their music all around the world. From a young age, Kai wanted to be a professional jazz drummer and made it his goal to move to London and pursue this dream. In December of 2017, he auditioned for the two main jazz conservatoire courses in London, receiving offers from both. In September of 2018, he will move to London to begin study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. In the future, he hopes to spend his time between London and New York, pursuing his career as a recording and performing jazz drummer.
