Ivan Ma is a graduate of the BMus (Hons) Community Music at the University of Aberdeen, with a classification of First-Class Honours. Having learnt the violin at the age of 7, the trumpet at the age of 10 and the piano at the age of 15, Ivan thrives on developing and expanding his musical talent by participating in a number of orchestras and performing as a soloist. Ivan received his violin, trumpet and piano tuition under the Fife Council Music Service, with Ian Adamson for violin, Claire Letham for trumpet and Susan Gormley for piano respectfully. Ivan later developed and critiqued his violin playing furthermore with tuition under the renowned orchestral musician Guera Crockett at the University of Aberdeen. Ivan thoroughly enjoyed performing with the University of Aberdeen Symphony (2016- 2020), Marischal Chamber Orchestra (2016-2020) and his annual participation with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) Symphony Orchestra (2015-Present). During his degree, Ivan has been given the opportunity to work with many different communities in a range of settings. Some of his experiences include working as a support musician for CREATE Aberdeen (a non-profit organisation that provides performance activities for adults with additional support needs), a voluntary tutor for Big Noise Torry and working with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) as an assistant/volunteer tutor at an SCO Connect VIBE Project event in Aberdeen. Ivan has created, planned and implemented a successful self-created project called the iTech the Music Project with two schools in Aberdeen that received great appraisal from the schools/participants on its new and innovative approach to music learning/composition with technology.

I worked with Ivan as a student on the BMus (Hons) Community Music programme since September 2018 until his Graduation with First Class Honours in July 2020. I have also known Ivan as an orchestral player for 4 years. Ivan is one of our most dedicated and enthusiastic students and advocates. He shows an excellent commitment to his work in and out of class, orchestral settings and within his ongoing studies or professional work. He is always fully prepared for lectures and rehearsals whilst being willing and able to adapt if the circumstances require. His academic profile during his time in the undergraduate programme was excellent resulting in the First-Class honours award. He is always punctual and presented himself without fail in a professional manner. Ivan has a keen academic and practical curiosity that serves him well, always looking to enhance skills and knowledge, willing to take every opportunity presented for feedback. He is a confident and capable practitioner and has the ability to use his skills in a range of settings and contexts, using his experiences he understandings well how to manage and lead projects and I am sure he will continue to develop this in the future. I have no doubt that Ivan has an extremely bright and diverse future ahead of him, I, therefore, cannot recommend him more highly to you.

Ivan Ma is a fourth-year student studying BMus (Hons) Community Music. Ivan plays violin, trumpet and piano. In this concert, he was appearing as a violinist with Beethoven’s ‘Violin Sonata No.5 Op.24’ often called ‘The Spring Sonata’. Jeremy Coleman had an important contribution to make to this performance. He was absolutely magnificent. Ivan’s violin tone was strong and lustrous, especially at the beginning. There are many fast moving and complex passages which he navigated with real energy and precision. It was just that he needs to refine his intonation just a little in order to make his way to a top level professional performance.
