Henry Hargreaves

This season Henry performs as Principal Cellist of the Sainsbury Royal Academy Soloist’s, participates in the London Symphony Orchestra String experience scheme and premieres new pieces for solo cello by Stephen McNeff and Alexander Papp. He appears in London performing Bach with the Strand Consort and in Oxford with Merton College Choir. Henry is principal cellist with the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Youth Music Centre in North London. Henry will also join the European Union Youth Orchestra. Upcoming engagements include performing with Glyndebourne Touring Opera through the Pit Perfect scheme, recording for Delphian records with Merton College Choir and a coffee concert at Champs Hill Music Room. Highlights from previous seasons include performing the Schumann Cello Concerto at the Waterloo Festival, a side-by-side project with the Nash Ensemble at Wigmore Hall and chamber music performances as part of the Thinking Musician Festival in Italy. Henry has performed live on Resonance FM and was a participant in the Britten Pears Young Artist’s programme in 2019. In the recording studio Henry has recorded for Metier Records and Miraco Studio. Henry’s musical education began aged 6 at the Bromley Youth Music Trust with Michael Nebe followed by private study with Gillian Thoday. He went on to complete a bachelor’s degree with first class honours at the Royal Academy of Music studying with Felix Schmidt and is currently completing a postgraduate degree at the same institution with Benjamin Hughes on scholarship. Henry has won numerous competitions and award’s both at the Royal Academy and externally. Henry plays on a 1750 English Cello and a Christian Wanka bow.
