About Ensemble x.y

London

In late 2014, a group of professional musicians met to discuss the current climate of new music in the contemporary art scene. The result was an outpouring of creativity, collaboration, and the formation of Ensemble x.y. A contemporary ensemble that commissions and performs new music in a flexible and ever-changing lineup, Ensemble x.y seeks to add to the 21st century repertoire, and to ensure that the vibrancy of creation that was so prevalent in other periods of music history is not lost in the increasingly jaded tradition of classical music performance. Run without traditional roles or hierarchies, the ensemble accepts submissions to its ongoing call for scores on a rolling basis. Such projects are brought to fruition by the individual players who wish to perform them. This ensures dedicated and professional performances and an intimate working relationship between composer and instrumentalists. When the music calls for it, we expand the formation to include new players, thus enabling the group to regularly experiment with new sound worlds and orchestration. Since its inception, x.y has commissioned and performed music from Geoffrey King, Joseph Havlat and Richard Hames, and in June 2015 will give the European premiere of Eric Wubbels’ virtuosic ‘Katachi.’
