Welsh soprano based in London. Durham University Music graduate. Currently studying on the MA programme at the Royal Academy of Music.
Elen is a twenty-five year old soprano from North West Wales, currently studying for her Master’s in Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, under the tutelage of vocal professor Mary Nelson and vocal coach Christopher Glynn. She was previously taught by Buddug Verona James. In 2014, she graduated from Durham University with a BA (hons) degree in Music. During her time there, she studied with Miranda Wright, and took on several operatic roles with Durham Opera Ensemble, including Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Valencienne (The Merry Widow), 1st Fairy (The Faerie Queen), 1st Lady (Die Zauberflöte), and Belinda (Dido and Aeneas). She was also a member of the Durham University Chamber Choir, with whom she performed as a soloist alongside Roderick Williams in their performance of Bach’s Johannes Passion. It was during her time at Durham that Elen first became involved with the prestigious Samling Academy, first becoming a participant in 2012. She has since performed in concerts across the North East with the Academy, including a concert series celebrating Shakespeare’s anniversary in 2016. She also took part in their production of Ravel’s magical opera L’Enfant et les Sortilèges in 2015, taking on the role of Le Chauve-Souris, as well as covering the title role. When she returns to North Wales, Elen performs widely in concerts and Nosweithiau Llawen (‘Social Evenings’), and joins the Dyffryn Peris Male Voice choir regularly as a guest soloist. She participates regularly in national and regional Eisteddfodau, with successes at the National Eisteddfod including reaching the final of the Towyn Roberts Scholarship competition in 2016, and the final of the Soprano Solo category in 2017. Also in 2017, she won the Classical Solo category at the National Urdd (Youth) Eisteddfod, and was a finalist in the MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition. At the Royal Academy of Music, she has taken on the roles of Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel) in the termly Opera Scenes showcase, and was a member of the chorus for Royal Academy Opera’s production of Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers. She is excited to be part of the Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata series both as a chorus member and a soloist. She is also a member of the Royal Academy of Music Chamber Choir, and joined them on their annual tour to the Neresheim Abbey in Germany. In summer 2017, Elen performed the role of Drusilla in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea with Hampstead Garden Opera, and sang Susanna in the Strand Chamber Orchestra’s inaugural operatic venture, in their production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. She was a semi-finalist in the London Bach Society Bach Singers' Prize. Elen’s solo oratorio repertoire includes Bach’s Johannes Passion and Matthäus Passion, Mozart’s Requiem and Sparrow Mass, Haydn's Little Organ Mass, and Britten’s semi-staged work Noye’s Fludde. She has participated in masterclasses with Sir Thomas Allen, Teresa Cahill, Roderick Williams, Caroline Dowdle, Patricia McMahon, Paul Farringdon, and Anna Huntley.
