"There is an infectious joy about their music - it's raw and real"! Let's get dancing with the Crannog Ceilidh Band!!

"Di is a particularly good caller – she does a great job of making people feel at ease when invited onto the floor and she is good at persuading people politely that they really should get off their backsides and dance NOW!!” A.C. – Brecon Who we are......... Crannog Ceilidh Band members - Al is a highly respected sound engineer as well as one of the best folk fiddlers in the country. Dan is a gifted singer/songwriter with a unique rhythmical style on mandocello, and Di is a talented cello player and Dance Caller. Together they provide a concert and dance band in one with the emphasis firmly on fun! Repertoire: Crannog's repertoire is varied encompassing tunes and songs from early music right through to modern self-penned compositions. Not content with just traditional Irish and Scottish tunes - which are the backbone of the Crannog sound - they also source tunes from further afield - Venezuela, Brittany, America etc. etc. Dan is a talented songwriter too and when appropriate will sing! Crannog is lucky enough to be joined by other talented artists when necessary. If, for example, a female singer is required, Catrin who sings in Welsh and English, will join them - and has the most lovely voice! If a bigger band is called for Crannog can call on the services of a talented guitarist Quince and Ade who is also a singer/songwriter! Alan Cooper (founder of Crannog) and Diana Esplin both started as classically trained musicians. Di went on to become a fully qualified cello teacher but now concentrates on playing in many other genres as well as classical. Al realised his passion and talent lay with folk and traditional music and naturally became one of the countries leading components of the folk fiddle. Together Al and Di work as recording artists and are the backbone of Crannog!! Crannog offer a bespoke, professional entertainment. Reliable, friendly and adaptable, Crannog musicians promise to bring everyone together on the dance floor for fun, laughter and a great time! There is an infectious joy about their music - which is spontaneous, raw and real. The humorous way in which everyone is included and encouraged to dance makes for a unique experience. Many people who were convinced that ceilidh dancing was not for them have been persuaded to have a go and later complimented Crannog for introducing them to it!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Our obvious joy and rapport with our audience! We love what we do and it is our mission to give you a great night of dancing and fun!

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We are Wedding Ceilidh specialists so ....... Lots and lots of fabulous hotels, village halls, country houses, music venues, private houses, etc.. At Festivals large and small. On hay wagons; in marques and tipees in fields and gardens ........

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Well thats a long story.....there are many!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

As a ceilidh band we have landed a regular spot at the prestigious Ruff Ceilidhs at Cardiff University Hospital! As individuals I guess its the big festivals - Sidmouth, Towersey, Hay on Wye and more.

Can you perform covers?

Yes we can do covers of traditional and popular folk songs.

Do you have different line-up options?

Our usual line up is fiddle, guitar/mandocello and caller for a ceilidh only. Our caller is also a cellist when three musicians are needed for an acoustic performance. We offer a duo of fiddle, mandocello and vocals - great for Irish themed events and traditional background music or concerts.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We are always happy to try to accommodate any changes in timings running up to your event. We take a flexible attitude once we are playing and will discuss with you any minor changes as they might occur.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We offer the use of our PA equipment for a playlist of your choice on ipod, ipad, laptop etc., played, under the supervision of our sound engineer, for up to 60 minutes immediately following the ceilidh. The fee for this service is £150.

How much time do you need to set up?

It only takes between 40 and 60 minutes to set up, however, we like to start the process about 90 minutes before starting so that we can soundcheck in good time.

Do you provide a caller?

Oh yes, we have a great caller! She is charismatic, enthusiastic and more of an entertainer than an instructor!! She will run the whole evening (like an MC) including making any announcements that you might need.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Our caller uses her many years of experience to decide on the night what dances will work with your guest's dance experience and energy levels but is happy to accept any suggestions you might have. There is a comprehensive list of folk songs that Dan can perform and you are welcome to pick and request the ones you want.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

Yes our quote is fully inclusive with no hidden extras.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Our mandocello player is also a talented singer and is happy to take requests.......however, he is a folk singer so no modern covers!

An amazing party. Mic, Alan and Quince were fantastic! They did everything I asked and so much more. They helped create a perfect event. They were relaxed, punctual and flexible. They played the fiddle and guitar to a really high standard. Mic as caller was brilliant and kept charge of us and the pace of the party... not easy! Their background music was spot on, PA system great too. Great job. Thank you all so much and a special thanks to Di who organised the band in the beginning. We will use you again and recommend you to all! Merry Christmas! Best wishes Andrea

Crannog were great with us! We got behind during our wedding day, so they were late getting into the hall to set up, but they did this quickly and smoothly, and we were soon underway! They were then flexible and accommodating with their schedule for the evening. Crannog were enthusiastic, and the music was great, and they even managed to get everyone up at the end for the last dance! Thank you for a great end to our wedding!
