Jazz trio
Sheffield
Expect a broad range of approaches, combining buoyant Latin grooves, delicate atmospheric offerings and driving swing!

Chronology are - Brian Bestall Drums & Percussion, Tim Knowles Guitar and Joss Mann-Hazzell Double Bass. Expect a broad range of approaches, combining buoyant Latin grooves, delicate atmospheric offerings and driving swing! Compositions from the post-war jazz period 1950-1980 from our favourite Blue Note modern jazz standards by Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Duke Ellington. MEET THE BAND Brian Bestall was born into a musical family in Sheffield in the late 50’s and brought up on a diet of jazz and swing played by his father, a well known local pianist. He soon realised that the only sure way to get attention was to play an instrument- and those old black and white films featuring Gene Krupa playing drums to hundreds of adoring girls had a certain attraction...! He started to play jazz, rock and pop on the local pub and club circuit in the 70’s and eventually moved into the “scampi in a basket” night club scene during the 80’s with various house bands including ex Walker Brothers’ Jimmy Wilson Band until Jimmy was tragically killed on his farm in a vehicle accident. The 90’s were filled with more residencies and recordings for TV and radio commercials. In 2000 Brian returned to his jazz roots as founder member of Black Coffee, a successful jazz quintet featuring singer Alice Coulam before founding Chronology in 2014. Brian is a full time musician and private drum teacher. Tim Knowles Tim Knowles is a musician, educator, and researcher who has lived in Sheffield since 2012, and began playing with Chronology in 2014. His musical interests are broad, with other current creative projects including Beyond Albedo (contemporary), the TOKI Trio (instrumental folk), and Genevieve Carver and The Unsung (poetry/music crossover). Tim is an instrumental tutor at AS Music School, and is currently undertaking a PhD project on participatory music-making (open mics; instrumental sessions), which is not – contrary to the suspicion of his friends – “just an excuse to go to the pub”. Joss Mann-Hazell Joss Mann-Hazell is a multi-instrumentalist and peripatetic tutor working in Sheffield and Chesterfield, and the most recent addition to Chronology. His previous work includes performance with the folk groups Isembard’s Wheels and 27 strings as well as jazz projects John Jacks & Edie Rose and Jazz Manifesto. He has recorded for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Sheffield. Joss has a strong interest in the diverse traditions of both British folk and North Indian classical music-and often finds jazz can act as a happy compromise between the two.
