About Charlie

A trumpeter, guitarist, composer, arranger and bandleader with experience across classical, jazz, musical theatre, rock, blues, funk and pop
Trumpeter
Welling

*Trumpet* On the trumpet I am experienced in classical, small group jazz, big band (especially lead) and musical theatre. I am a confident improviser and a good sight-reader. In addition, I have been principal trumpet of numerous orchestras. *Guitar* On the guitar I can play in a huge variety of styles, including musical theatre, jazz, funk, blues (including slide guitar), rock, metal and reggae. I comfortably read chord symbols, standard notation and tablature as well as being able to play by ear and confidently improvise. I have a strong understanding of effects and their uses particularly in musical theatre, as demonstrated by my performance in NYMT’s production of Chess, a show with a very varied and demanding guitar part. *Ensemble player / bandleader / arranger / composer* I have played in a lot of ensembles of varying sizes and genres, which has given me the abilities to either lead the group or sit back and accompany depending on what the situation calls for. Most notably I formed a rock band to play a set of covers at a local festival, and I lead a jazz sextet that plays my compositions and arrangements of standard tunes. GEAR: *Brass* • B♭ trumpet • Flügelhorn • Piccolo trumpet • E♭/D trumpet • Tenor horn • Soprano trombone • Bass trumpet • Mutes: straight, cup, Harmon, plunger, bucket, Solotone, piccolo straight, bass straight *Guitars* • Electric guitar (6- and 7-strings) • Steel-string and nylon-string acoustic guitars • Steel-string baritone acoustic guitar • Banjo • Mandolin • Ukulele

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

When I was 10, I played an adaptation of the Swan Lake suite with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, in Trafalgar Square, to an audience of several thousand. It was my first major orchestral experience of dozens so far, and is one of the reasons I now love performing so much.

How much time do you need to set up?

Trumpet - 5-10 mins Guitar - 10-30 mins For both instruments, setup time greatly depends on how many doubling instruments I have, and in the case of the guitar, the backline/PA setup.
