Cantlos are a song and instrumental duo specialising in the traditional songs and music of the British Isles and Ireland.

Cantlos are a song and instrumental duo specialising in the traditional songs of the British Isles and Ireland, with an emphasis on those from the Celtic cultures within these islands. Cantlos are Kirsty Morris and James McCafferty and play clàrsach (Irish/Celtic lever harp), cittern, dulcimer, acoustic guitar, melodeon and bodhrán. Cantlos are available for weddings, celebrations, concerts and festivals. Their repertoire spans more than five centuries of songs and instrumental music, including medieval carols, Elizabethan tavern songs, folk music and contemporary songs within the traditional idiom. For clients who want to get family and friends on their feet and experiencing some traditional dancing from these isles, we bring a complete sound system with digitally recorded folk dance tracks to get everyone in the party mood! All the dances we use are very simple and specifically chosen so they're suitable for absolute beginners of all ages. We walk through each dance before the music starts - and once it does, James calls all the figures while the dancers are doing their stuff. Share an evening with Cantlos and discover for yourself the mystery and magic of songs, music and dances evoked by the Celtic heartlands.

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes - it can just be me (James McCafferty) as a solo guitar/vocalist or we can provide duo, trio or quartet formats using a bewilderingly diverse range of stringed instruments, woodwind and percussion!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We're very flexible on timing changes, as long as the gig length is roughly the same as we've agreed.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Background music easily provided between live sets if required!

How much time do you need to set up?

Usually between 30 - 45 minutes, depending on how many instruments we'll be using.

Can you roam around while you perform?

We occasionally provide "travelling minstrel" sets without amplification.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

You can certainly pick songs from our list - and we like our audiences to join in some of the old favourites with us.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

All equipment is included in the quote.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If we have enough time to rehearse a special song, we'll always do our best to include it for you.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

We really like to engage with our audiences, so we like to talk to them about the music we're playing and the instruments we're using, rather than just playing song after song without much in between!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

We've performed at lots of stunning stately homes and historic buildings all over the UK, but I guess the most iconic must be the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London!

James did a barn dance for us in June and he was great! Got my family and friends up and dancing, even though it was quite warm, and the dances were fun and accessible. 100% recommend. :)

Thank you both so, so much for such a super evening. Really put one in the mood for Christmas and such a welcome relief after the ubiquitous White Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town etc.

Thank you for the lovely concert on Thursday evening – it was really enjoyable and I’m very glad I came. There were several carols I hadn’t heard before – from France mainly I think – and I particularly enjoyed meeting those, plus the instrumental pieces you introduced which added great variety. It’s good stuff and gets better every time I see it.
