About Cambridge University Wind Orchestra (CUWO)

Wind Orchestra
Cambridge
CUWO brings fresh, exciting and diverse programmes together with musical excellence to create high quality concerts every term.

Cambridge University Wind Orchestra was founded in 1987, with guidance from Timothy Reynish, renowned advocate of wind orchestral music. It was originally known as the CUMS Wind Orchestra, then the CUMS Zephyr ensemble and now CUWO. Cambridge University Wind Orchestra is a top quality wind orchestra led by a number of student conductors. CUWO gives wind, brass and percussion players the opportunity to perform lighter music, with our repertoire ranging from wind band classics, to film scores, to recently-composed contemporary pieces. Students highly enjoy the opportunity to play repertoire not traditionally found in symphony and chamber orchestras. Many opt to play in both CUWO and another CUMS orchestra as they all rehearse at different times and each offer very different challenges. CUWO rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings during term time and plays in four concerts per year. The regular rehearsals help the group to bond within the first few weeks of Michaelmas Term and our social secretaries organise a range of fun events throughout the year; from a meal, to an evening of drinks, to our renowned post-concert socials. It really is a fantastic ensemble to be a part of.
