Benjamin Gutsell is a tenor, singing teacher and musical director based in the South West. He graduated from Cardiff University with a Bachelor of Music Degree and studies with Bristol-based singing teacher, Frith Trezevant. During his degree, Benjamin was awarded the David Lloyd Vocal Scholarship and, in his final year, he took on the role of Chorus Manager of the University Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir, Section Leader for the Palestrina Singers as well as being a core member of the Contemporary Music Ensemble. He was a senior scholar at St Martin’s Church, Roath where he was also Assistant conductor, and a Lay Clerk for the Girls Choir of the Cathedral School, Llandaff. Alongside his passion for choral music, Benjamin was the Social and Rag Representative for the Operatic Society where he portrayed roles including ‘Mopsa’ - The Fairy Queen; Purcell and ‘Monostatos’ – The Magic Flute; Mozart. In 2014, Benjamin was appointed Conductor of Worle School’s Youth Choir. He took them on tour to Bruges in 2016 where he conducted them at the Last Post Ceremony at the Meningate, Ypres, on the centenary of the Battle of Somme. In 2015 he became the Musical Director for Re:ACT Theatre Company where he directed 'Les Miserables' and is currently working towards a production of 'Beauty and the Beast Jr' in July 2017. Furthermore, Benjamin joined Re:ACT’s core team of singing teachers in December 2016 where he provides individual vocal tuition to it’s members. Benjamin is a section Leader for the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and has toured both the UK and China, performed in the BBC Proms, Snape Malting Proms, Edinburgh Fringe, Derry City of Culture Festival and performed with Kylie Minogue in her two night spectacular, A Kylie Christmas, in 2016. He also performs with the esteemed National Youth Chamber Choir, singing in radio 3 broadcasts, Cheltenham Music Festival and Petworth Music Festival as part of the Shakespeare collaboration, 'The Play’s the Thing', with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. As a staff member, Benjamin has been a Pastoral and Social Assistant on residential courses and Auditions Administrator. He regularly sings with Icosa Chamber Choir, Caritas Choir, The BBC National Chorus of Wales and Bristol Choral Society as a choral scholar for 2016/17.
