About Benjamin Irvine-Capel

Organist, Pianist, Counter-Tenor (alto) singer. Extensive experience in religious music, including accompaniment. Engaging stage presence.

Benjamin Irvine-Capel (b. 2005) is the Walter K Stanton Music Scholar of Lancing College, where he sings with the Choral Scholars and Chapel Choir. In addition to his vocal studies (currently studying for DipABRSM), Benjamin is undertaking an ARCO in his organ studies, tutored by Alex Mason. Since October 2020, Benjamin has been an Alto of Portsmouth Cathedral Choir’s “Cantate Back Row”. In this position, Benjamin sings as a part of the choral foundation of the cathedral for Sunday services and major events, under the direction of Dr David Price. Prior to Lancing College and Portsmouth Cathedral, Benjamin was a chorister for six years at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, where his vocal coaches included Veronica Veysey Campbell and Jean-Claude Ohms. Whilst under the baton of Andrew Carwood at the nation’s cathedral, Benjamin undertook major solo repertoire, including repeat appearances as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah and the St John and St Matthew Passions by J.S. Bach. It was from St Paul’s Cathedral that Benjamin appeared as a soloist and as part of the world-famous cathedral choir on BBC television for major state occasions, including the Afghanistan Memorial Service, the 10th Anniversary of the 7/7 London Bombings, the Centenary of the OBE, the 90th Birthday of HM The Queen, and the Memorial Service for Victims of the Grenfell Tower Fire. Benjamin has also broadcast multiple times for BBC radio, appearing annually (including as a soloist) on BBC Radio 3’s Choral Evensong, as well as an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s The Today Programme and featuring as a soloist on BBC Radio 3 as part of the St Albans Organ Festival, singing the Five Spirituals by Michael Tippett. Further afield, Benjamin has toured twice to the USA, in addition to a tour to Germany. Most notably, he featured as a soloist in the programme for the 2018 tour to the USA, with his performances of Pie Jesu from Faure’s Requiem being heard throughout America and beyond via livestream. When in Germany, Benjamin acted as cantor for a programme based heavily on the ancient form of music – plainsong.
