About Alex Wilson

Jazz and Classical Saxophonist based in Oxford
Alex Wilson's profile picture

Alex Wilson has performed across Oxford as a jazz and classical saxophonist of distinction. He is equally at home playing in a nightclub with a DJ, in a pit band for theatre, in the studio for a pop session, in a classical orchestra, in a horn section for a soul/funk band, in a jazz orchestra, leading a small jazz ensemble or even playing in a Ceilidh band! Alex Wilson is currently studying at Oxford University for a degree in music, whilst also having lessons in jazz saxophone from Martin Speake at the Royal Academy of Music. Before this, he studied saxophone, clarinet, piano and percussion variously for three years at the Junior department of the Guildhall School of Music. During this time, he achieved a diploma with distinction in saxophone, and grade 8 with distinction in piano, clarinet, percussion and jazz saxophone. As well as tenor, alto and soprano saxophones, Alex is an adept clarinettist and pianist. He is also proficient at sight-reading in both a classical and jazz idiom, as well as improvisation. Performance highlights to date include leading the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra and Oxford University Orchestra in a concert of jazz for big band and strings at the Sheldonian theatre, Oxford, and playing the solo saxophone part in front of the Oxford University Sinfonietta for a two-night performance run of Mark-Anthony Turnage's 'Blood On The Floor'. Other notable venues include the Royal Albert Hall, Montreux Jazz Festival and the Vortex Jazz Club in London.

"the jazz orchestra, supported by the string section of OUO, rose to the demanding technicalities under the superb direction of its multi-talented director, incredibly young Alex Wilson, who is surely aimed for stardom, not only as an already established saxophonist, but is currently Worcester College’s organ scholar - some people have almost unfair multi talents and Alex is surely a star example."
