About Aine

Accordionist
London
Accordion for all genres

London based multi-instrumentalist Aine McLoughlin is not your typical musician. Born and raised in Mullagh Co Cavan, Ireland, she realised from an early age that though she could turn her hand to many instruments (including the guitar and piano), her real passion was for a lesser-loved instrument - the accordion. Starting lessons at just 11 she instantly fell in love with the instrument, and has since competed (and won) many international solo, ensemble and orchestral competitions. After graduating as an accordion teacher, she also appeared on many national and international television shows performing and teaching her beloved instrument. Since moving to London in 2015, Aine has recorded in Abbey Road, Air and Konk Studios, and has covered everything from classical and folk, to contemporary and pop. She’s played top London venues, including Union Chapel and the National Theatre, and has performed in ensembles, chamber orchestras, operettas, traditional folk groups, scottish ceilidhs, Irish ceili pub sessions and french cafe jams (to name a few). She also manages to find the time to perform in the London Accordion Orchestra (under the musical direction of Ian Watson), be a member of modern folk band Hazel Iris, and work on a solo project - a series of compositions to highlight the beauty, simplicity and many techniques of acoustic accordion. Aine is determined to revive the education of accordion with young people, and is currently working on a number of projects and applying for funding to make this happen. She puts her success down to a unique mix of accordion performance, education and music technology, plus a healthy dose of obsession for the instrument. She has no doubt that it’s possible to incorporate accordion in to any style of music, and is looking forward to experimenting more in future!

I invited Aine to play a solo slot in my ‘Push the Buttons’ concert at Union Chapel last December. The concert was a showcase to highlight the huge potential of the accordion in all genres of music. Aine was keen to involve loop pedals with her own composition for solo accordion and electronics. The result was a stunning mix of fine artistic playing by Aine, showing great technique but also a real command over the electronics side of the piece. The audience reception was rapturous and following the concert this was one of the most talked about parts of the program. A fine performance by a wonderful musician.

We hired Aine for our engagement party as we wanted something a little different. I grew up with my grandad playing the accordion and have always loved the instrument. It was perfect - something out of the ordinary but still with a lot of songs we knew and a few traditional Irish songs mixed in. Everyone was dancing from the first drink!
